Liebe Freunde und Fans des alpinen Segelflugs, der Faszination Alpinflug, nun ist es also doch soweit.
Das Schönjoch ist für uns Modellflieger ab 2027 tot!
Bereits im vergangenen September hatte ich eine leise Ahnung, als auf unserem Fluggelände am Schönjoch der neue Fotopoint errichtet wurde. Nun hat eine weitere Entscheidung der Bergbahn Gewissheit geschaffen:
Der Flying Circus wird künftig nicht mehr auf dem Schönjoch stattfinden können.
Nach den aktuellen Planungen soll auf unserem bisherigen Fluggelände ein Kinderspielplatz entstehen.
Durch infrastrukturelle Veränderungen, unter anderem an der Möseralmbahn, die bis zum Zwölferkopf weiter gebaut werden soll, wird an der Möseralm, wo jetzt die Gondelbahn endet, ein Teil der bisherigen Spielflächen entfallen. Diese sollen künftig auf dem Schönjoch neu geschaffen werden.
Für mich ist diese Entscheidung nur schwer nachvollziehbar. Direkt neben dem Bergdiamant befindet sich bereits ein großzügiges Spielparadies, das von Familien hervorragend angenommen wird. Umso überraschender ist daher die Entscheidung, auf 2.500 Metern Höhe ausgerechnet die Fläche anders zu nutzen, die seit Jahrzehnten untrennbar mit dem Flying Circus und dem Modellflug in Fiss verbunden ist.
Das Fluggelände am Schönjoch genießt weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus einen hervorragenden Ruf. Es ist international bekannt, in zahlreichen Flugführern und Karten verzeichnet und Fiss wirbt selbst aktiv mit den Möglichkeiten des Modellflugs. Viele Teilnehmer haben nach dem 30. Flying Circus bereits ihre Unterkunft für das kommende Jahr reserviert. Sollte die Planung umgesetzt werden, wird dies zwangsläufig zu großer Enttäuschung führen.
Die Entscheidung, das Schönjoch künftig infrastrukturell anders zu nutzen, steht im Zusammenhang mit der langfristigen Weiterentwicklung der Bergbahnen und der gesamten Destination. Diese Maßnahmen seien laut TVB und Bergbahn strategisch notwendig und dienen dazu, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis auch für die kommenden Jahrzehnte sicherzustellen. Es handele sich dabei aber ausdrücklich nicht um eine Entscheidung gegen den Modellflug oder gegen den Flying Circus.
Aber nun eben leider doch – denn hochalpines Fliegen ist das ausschlaggebende Merkmal dieses Events!
Als langfristige Alternative wurde mir freundlicherweise der Perdatscher Bichl angeboten oder das Serfauser Feld empfohlen. Für dieses Angebot möchte ich mich ausdrücklich bedanken.
Dennoch zeigt dieser Vorschlag aus meiner Sicht, dass die besondere Bedeutung des Schönjochs in seiner Einzigartigkeit für den hochalpinen Modellflug und damit für den Flying Circus nicht vollständig erkannt wurde. Drei Jahrzehnte lang stand diese Veranstaltung für hochalpinen Modellsegelflug in einer einzigartigen Kulisse. Erst das Zusammenspiel aus Gelände, Panorama, Atmosphäre, Infrastruktur und den außergewöhnlichen fliegerischen Bedingungen des Schönjoch hat den Flying Circus zu dem gemacht, was er heute ist.
Ein Flying Circus, der diesem Anspruch gerecht wird, ist beim Perdatscher Bichl nicht vorstellbar.
Eine andere Location im Bereich Fiss, die ähnliche Bedingungen wie auf dem Schönjoch samt Infrastruktur bieten kann, ist leider nicht vorhanden.
Deshalb habe ich mich schweren Herzens entschieden und dieses Angebot dankend abgelehnt.
Das Ende des Flying Circus am Schönjoch soll jedoch nicht das Ende des Flying Circus sein.
Der Flying Circus wird weiterleben – an einem Ort, an dem wir willkommen sind, nachhaltige Unterstützung erfahren und die Idee dieser einzigartigen Veranstaltung auch in Zukunft ihren Platz hat. Daran arbeite ich nun mit voller Kraft.
Der Weg dorthin wird vielleicht etwas weiter sein.
Aber ich bin überzeugt: Er wird sich lohnen.

so the time has finally come.
For us model flyers, the Schönjoch will be a thing of the past from 2027!
I already had a faint inkling last September when the new photo point was erected at our flying site on the Schönjoch. Now, a further decision by the mountain railway has made it certain:
The Flying Circus will no longer be able to take place at the Schönjoch in future.
According to current plans, a children’s playground is to be built on our current flying site.
Due to infrastructural changes, including work on the Möseralmbahn cable car – which is to be extended as far as the Zwölferkopf – part of the existing play areas at the Möseralm, where the gondola currently terminates, will be lost. These are to be recreated on the Schönjoch in future.
I find this decision very difficult to understand. Right next to the Bergdiamant, there is already a spacious play area that is extremely popular with families. This makes the decision all the more surprising: at an altitude of 2,500 metres, of all places, to repurpose the very area that has been inextricably linked to the Flying Circus and model flying in Fiss for decades.
The flying site at Schönjoch enjoys an excellent reputation far beyond the country’s borders. It is internationally renowned, featured in numerous flight guides and maps, and Fiss itself actively promotes the opportunities for model flying. Many participants have already booked their accommodation for next year following the 30th Flying Circus. Should these plans go ahead, this will inevitably lead to great disappointment.
The decision to use the Schönjoch for different infrastructure purposes in future is linked to the long-term development of the mountain railways and the destination as a whole. According to the Tourist Board and the mountain railway company, these measures are strategically necessary and serve to ensure the competitiveness of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis for decades to come. However, it is expressly stated that this is not a decision against model flying or against the Flying Circus.
But now, unfortunately, it is – because high-altitude flying is the defining feature of this event!
As a long-term alternative, I was kindly offered the Perdatscher Bichl or recommended the Serfauser Feld.
I would like to express my sincere thanks for this offer.
Nevertheless, in my view, this proposal shows that the special significance of the Schönjoch, with its unique characteristics for high-alpine model flying and thus for the Flying Circus, has not been fully recognised. For three decades, this event has been synonymous with high-alpine model gliding in a unique setting. It is the combination of the terrain, the panoramic views, the atmosphere, the infrastructure and the exceptional flying conditions at the Schönjoch that has made the Flying Circus what it is today.
It is impossible to imagine a Flying Circus that lives up to these standards at Perdatscher Bichl.
Unfortunately, there is no other venue in the Fiss area that can offer conditions similar to those at the Schönjoch, including the necessary infrastructure.
It is therefore with a heavy heart that I have decided to politely decline this offer.
However, the end of the Flying Circus at the Schönjoch should not spell the end of the Flying Circus.
The Flying Circus will live on – in a place where we are welcome, where we receive long-term support, and where the concept of this unique event will continue to have its place in the future.
I am now working on this with all my energy.
The journey there may be a little longer.
But I am convinced: it will be worth it.
